about

Tales of Tup and Ox is our winter release for 2023 and both tracks express our desire to approach traditional songs through untraditional and uncanny arrangements. This release has been inspired by “Animal Guising”, the folk custom of ritual animal disguise that takes many forms across the British Isles, and throughout the world.

“Here’s to the Ox!” is a variation of the Gloucestershire Wassailing Song (Roud 209). It’s a curious version, one gathered in the Cotswolds by R. P. Chidlaw. Its central figure is a nameless Ox, one presumed to be “Old Broad” the animal guise that accompanies regional Wassailing traditions and Mummers Plays.

“The Derby Ram” (Roud 126) is one of the most popular English songs. It is intimately connected with mummery in Yorkshire and Derbyshire, where the character of the hooded ram is killed (and sometimes returned to life) in the quête of the play. Our version is an amalgamation of several other versions, including original contributions and a selection of those collected by the folklorist Peter Kennedy.
